Living with tics can be frustrating, making you feel self-conscious or misunderstood. If you or your child is noticing sudden movements or sounds impacting life, you definitely aren't alone. About 1 in 5 kids will experience tics during childhood. Most of them are temporary or resolve on their own with time, but sometimes they linger or even intensify with time.
What are Tics?
Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds, sometimes occurring involuntarily. There are two types:
-
Motor Tics: Involve movements such as head jerking, shoulder shrugging, eye blinking, and facial grimacing.
-
Vocal Tics: Involve sounds, such as sniffing, grunting, throat clearing, or repeating sounds/words.
Early intervention can make a difference in treating tics. If they are interfering in life or not going away, it is likely time to try treatment.
Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an evidence-based, structured treatment that has been shown to help children, teens, adults, and families feel confident in reducing and managing tics/Tourette's. Reach out to schedule a consultation about CBIT for you or a loved one.
